I recently updated my portfolio page. I took a look at it and decided that it was not showing off my work. So I started over and ended up with something that does a better job at showing off my work very well.
One of the first things I did was break it up into different categories. Instead of having one slideshow containing everything, I have three slideshows: websites, logos, and 3D. Now I can have more items without overwhelming a potential client. I have four websites, three logos, and three 3D images. I will probably get up to six of each, but these will do for now.
The next thing I did was scrap the slideshow I had and got a new one from Dynamic Drive. The one I had put thumbnails in a column on the left. When you hovered over a thumbnail, it would put that image in the main viewer. This slideshow did not look quite right. So I chose the Ultimate Fade-in slideshow. The arrows did not look right on my site, so I created new ones.
These changes made a world of difference. It really helped to reevaluate my portfolio page. My portfolio has grown to where I needed to break it out into different categories. I will be adding a fourth slideshow for animations soon. This will give me four slideshows with between three and six items each, for a total of between 12 and 24 items for my portfolio page. This seems like a good number for potential clients to get a good idea of what I am capable of.
